Singita and Magashi Camps: Gorilla Wildlife in Rwanda 2024-03-27T09:40:11+00:00

Rwanda the land of hills is known for gorilla as the main draw and since it has rebranded to be the luxury tourism destination, it’s worth going for its luxury facilities situated in tourism areas.

The Singita Kwitonda Lodge offers an experience unlike any of Singita’s other destinations. With its exceptional natural beauty, environmentally conscious luxury, and transformative, purpose-driven experiences, the lodge was designed in response to this remarkable location, and the eight contemporary suites (as well as the private four-bedroom villa – Kataza House) are linked by volcanic rock pathways to the central lodge.

Singita Kwitonda Lodge’s unrivalled position puts life changing gorilla trekking experiences within easy reach. Each of the eight luxurious suites features a private heated plunge pool, wellness treatment area, in- and outdoor fireplaces and large timber-framed windows that welcome breathtaking scenery and volcano views inside.

Mountain bamboo, ferns, giant lobelias and forest trees provide a natural backdrop that over time will engulf the buildings and reclaim them back into the forest. Dramatic stone walls rise out of the volcanic boulders, and from these the architecture is suspended. A combination of green-roofed, stonewalled, organic cabin-like structures set alongside light verandas offers a dynamic play on shape and texture.

The space forms an experiential enclave with lounges, dining areas, an outdoor fire pit, an interactive kitchen, bar deli and a wine cellar for guests to enjoy.

It offers 7 one-bedroom suites (sleeps 2), each with indoor and outdoor showers, an indoor bath, a sitting/rest area, covered veranda, dressing room, mini bar, an in-room massage area, indoor and outdoor fireplaces and a heated plunge pool.

It also offers a two-bedroom suite (sleeps 4) with two identical bedrooms featuring indoor baths, indoor and outdoor showers, in-room massage areas and dressing rooms. The suite offers indoor and outdoor fireplaces, a more spacious sitting/rest area, a mini bar, covered veranda and a heated plunge pool.

It goes ahead to include an exclusive-use four-bedroom villa, Kataza House (sleeps 8), featuring indoor baths and showers, indoor and outdoor fireplaces, informal living and dining areas, an interactive kitchen, covered veranda, heated plunge pools, cinema room, massage treatment room, fitness centre and small cellar.

For you to do gorilla trekking, golden monkey treks, hikes to the volcanoes and the hike to Dian Fossey’s gravesite while at the lodge, you must come when you have already booked before you are at the Singita premises.

The lodge offers tailored activities to specifically suit the interests of each family. The minimum age requirement for gorilla trekking is 15, but the lodge offers childminding services, as well as an array of activities to keep little ones engaged and entertained.

Once the gorilla trek is done, you cross to Magashi camp in Akagera National Park for that wildlife encounter. You have the chance to witness the abundance of Akagera National Park from Wilderness Magashi.  Home once more to an abundance of apex predators and their prey. Marvel at lion, white and black rhino, buffalo and elephant roaming its hills and vast savannah.

Perched on the shores of Lake Rwanyakazinga, is Magashi’s eight spacious tented suites that welcomes you to an intimate wilderness area, surrounded by one of the most serene landscapes imaginable as the ideal stage for exceptional safari adventures.

The meals at Magashi are designed in a sustainable mind, offering healthy and good flavoured recipes that trend on the Earth. Enjoy Rwanda’s indigenous ingredients, local dishes and fresh produce while at the camp. Don’t miss out on a traveling Kugisha dinner, which is served with a collection of traditional stories and songs.

No other camp can be found in this vast expanse of beautiful wilderness teeming with hippo, crocodile, a plethora of birds… and incredibly rarer species such as Sitatunga antelope and the Black Rhino. A large pride of Lions can be seen on daily game drives through this pristine sanctuary making Magashi camp a perfect Big game safari after your gorilla trek in Rwanda.

Only six luxury tents are offered at Magashi Camp, each architectural element an homage to traditional Rwandan culture. Enjoy the leisurely walk along raised wooden walkways surrounded by the lush greenery of Akagera Park to reach your room.

You will have a small seating arrangement where you can put up your feet and enjoy the beauty of Akagera National Park. The open racks are perfect for unpacking for your safari trip, and although there is no air conditioning, a pedestal fan keeps the interiors ventilated. Drinking water is placed in the tented rooms in refillable glass bottles.

Other amenities include tea and coffee making supplies, electronic safe for storing valuables, journal table and chair, and a minibar. You can spend time on the wraparound wooden deck outside that has lightweight rattan furniture. The en-suite bathroom is at the back and is constructed out of wall tiling and stone floors. Expect to see a separate shower area and a single vanity. High-grade toiletries, a vanity kit, eco-friendly detergent, bathrobes, and slippers are placed for your use. Once you are at full memory, take off back to Kigali for your final flight back home.
